Gerund or Infinitive?.

read · 3 min

After one verb, do you use -ing (gerund) or to + verb (infinitive)? It depends on the first verb — and a few take both.

Verbs + -ing

enjoy, finish, avoid, suggest, mind, keep, practise → I enjoy reading.

Verbs + to

want, need, decide, hope, plan, promise, agree → I want to read.

After prepositions, always -ing

good at swimming · interested in learning · before going

Both — sometimes with a meaning change

stop to rest (pause in order to) vs stop resting (end the activity)
